The Game of the Day to end all Game of the Days was Brick's win over Jackson. Andrew Ventura scored on a direct kick in the last minute of regulation to save Jackson for the moment. The two teams appeared to be headed for a tie, until Tom Bastidas scored off a Corey Bransdorfer feed with thirty seconds left in the second overtime to clinch an SCT berth for the Dragons one year after a 2-12 season.
I was at the Shore-Rumson game today, which was a great game. Sean Pahler came up huge in his first game in two weeks and really took over the game in the second half with his size in the middle. All that said, Roberto Novoa was, in my opinion, the best player on the field.
I know there will be those on this board who say the refs gave Rumson the game, but there were planty of questionable calls to go around. Novoa scored on a free kick on a call that could have gone either way. The questionable PK awarded to Rumson came shortly after a certain takedown in the box.
Right before the deciding throw-in, the Rumson player did appear to be offsides from where I was standing. It's a tough pill to swallow if you're Shore, but at the end of the day give Rumson credit. They outshot the Devils, battled back from a 2-0 deficit and started taking over the game in the second half.

gorr didnt score it, Ventura did
I guess the other coach got it wrong when he called in. I changed it for now, but I'll have to talk to Bado before I change it in my stats.
Rumson game: Play was clearly offside and thats how they won the game. It should be noted that center midfield was lost in 2nd half due to C. MacKenzie and S. Khale's injuries. One on a stretcher because of a violent play that was never called....At that point the Shore coach wasnt left with many options. Had to leave 1 of his best midfielders on outside to shutdown Portman & Alter. (Scarpino did an amazing job). R. Novoa is one of the bets players in the league. Shore should be commended here for keeping Rumson at bay for so long considering they were down 3 of there starters. Had Shore not been knocked down 2 players it would have been a different score without a doubt. I give Rumson credit for coming back. They had homefield advantage after all. Especially with the stadium size obnoxious fan section behind Shore's goal, which were asked to remove themselves after the 2nd goal was scored (interestingly enough). Again...questionable officiating. Hindsight is 20/20 however given the fact that it was well known that this was to be a intense game the refs. should have been more prepared.
I went to the Rumson-Shore game. Exciting game- marred by terrible calls and lack of calls. Rumson players should be ashamed-Laughing at a player when they are seriously injured (Hospital) is disgraceful. Rumson fans taunting the Shore goalie and ref only asking them to move away until the game was tied? Rumson won- but winning on a goal that was set-up by a play prior that was offside by a mile taints the game.
Shore game- Takedown in the box- Player could of only touched the ball if he was 15 feet tall. You do not make a call for a PK- how about an indirect Kick.
Matt: Regarding your article in the Saturday Press....It's so nice to hear that Pahler shrugged off his injury. I wonder though, if the player who was knocked in the head and sent to hospital is going to shrug his injury off...
Your article did not represent what happened on the field (I do not mean that disrespectfully). You made it sound like the win did not have any controversy.
you forgot one game in b-south tha game between donovan and point boro.. which was great and donovan won 2 to 0
I am a Midd North fan and I wanted to thank you for the headline. Brick-Jackson was a great game but this win put us in the tournament and really messed with possible SCT seeding.
What are the seeders going to do with Freehold Township, they beat and tied CBA plus beat Howell? It is going to be a mess for them.
I must admit the game favored FT (just look at the shot count), but Nick was able to spring free twice for clutch goals. The one thing I noticed was, Freehold Township's top defender was not playing on him. Number 6 seemed to have different assignments yesterday.
Hey Matt, what a mess you have now determining a top ten. I am going to take a stab at it.
1- TRE(playing best out of anyone, plus with Brick's win last night they have two legit losses)
2- Howell(with KB back this team will be tough to beat)
3- Manalapan
4- CBA
5- Jackson
6- Brick (watch out for this team if they play how they played last night in the SCT, the young kids are coming of age)
7- Mon Don
8- TRS
9- Rumson (big win last night)
10- Neptune (I know, I know, but now they are finally heathly and the team I see right now belongs in the top ten.
Everyone seems so set that Rumson was givent the game by the refs, but the calls were going both ways and all were questionable. Rumson won the first game also, so it is no question that they have the skill to beat Shore.
alright, so Rumson beat shore, but they had a hard time. Shore had 3 important players hurt, 2 of them got hurt during this game, so we all agree that shore had a disadvantage. Roberto Novoa did really good controlling the midfield for shore, he had 2 of the best goals ive ever seen. in the end Rumson won after a terrible mistake by the refs, that player was deffinately offside by a few yards. Rumson had the opportunity and took advantage of it, but i think if shore had Connor mackenzie, steve kahle and bryan guadagno, the score wouldve been totally different.
Best wishes for a quick recovery for the Shore player who suffered the concussion. It was one of those unfortunate collison of heads with no malice.
When, oh when will we ever see fit match officials who can keep up with the game - soccer requires a referee and 2 assistants (linesmen). That's the only way that games can be controlled and important calls such as offside can be correct.
Bad calls in this game went both ways. Shore's first goal came from a breakaway from a free-kick that was given the wrong way.
Despite the intense rivalry, and the defeat, I did hear a couple stories of good sportsmanship shown by Shore players when the teams lined up at the end. Bravo!
Well done RFH (Go Dawgs)!
(and good luck also to Shore in post-season)
Rumson deserved to win the first game not the second. I think the teams will see each other again so this could be settled
unfortunate collison of heads with no malice. It was an elbow to the back of the head.
I hope Shore plays Rumson again, i wanna see what would happen if Shore actually had all their starters...things would be different
neptune deserves more credit. they have won 4 straight games over monmouth reg, ocean, wall, matawan. wall and ocean should not be ahead of them in your top 25
I was seriously considering Neptune for the top ten very early in the season, but they got off to a 1-3 start. They are playing great right now, up to their potential if you ask me, but you have to take the whole body of work in the top ten and a 6-4 team from B North is going to have trouble getting in over the team that won the division and a 6-4 teams from A South.
I don't call out refs in stories unless the coaches go on record and say stuff about them. Reynolds and Gioia basically said what I believed and that was that there were some calls they thought were missed, but it was called both ways. Rumson got the last break and they made it count. Plus when I only have so much space to write a story, I'd rather get the other stuff in before refs and even the injury, which, of course, was a big play.
Matt- What did you think of the Shore team now that you have seen them play?
the last goal in the shore vs. rumson game wasnt offside cuz it was a thrown-in.. even so, there was a shore player on the back post keeping everyone onside. i was on the field, i would know
the play prior to the goal, the player was offside by a few yards
It was the play prior that was offside so if you were on the field you did not pay attention. The offiside was clearly missed and Rumson won on the following play. It is over and Rumson won a tainted game. Good luck to Rumson in the Playoffs-Maybe Shore will play them again.
As a parent I felt that was the most horrendous game I've ever watched - RFH players spent more time slamming into shore players and rolling on the ground for attention than they did actually playing the game of soccer. Some of those RFH players should be on the stage, not the soccer field!!
Goal of the season by Roberto (Tito) Novoa... anyone that saw that goal will remember it for years to come.
Conner McKenzie aka Caveman lived up to his name until his head had taken too many knocks. An elbow to the back of the head had the game stopped and him hospitalized. Didn't seem to phase RFH as they were intent on doing as much physical damage as possible. The fans, not content with violence on the field leading to hospitalization of a player, continued to show their unsportsmanlike attitude by taunting the goalie from directly behind the goal. Fearless Tayrone Junqueira continued to hang onto the ball despite knowing the RFH players were going to barrel into him. It took the Whistle Blower (can't really call him a ref) two goals to realize what was going on with the 40 or so RFH "fans" behind the goal.
The bad sportsmanship wasn't just limited to the RFH students - obviously they are products of their environment if the parents watching the game near me were anything to go by.
All in all Shore played their hearts out and RFH got their aggression out. Goals scored was no reflection of the skill on the field. We all know who the real winners were of that game.
I couldn't agree more with your opinions of the Shore/RFH game. RFH showed unsportsman like behavior and although they ultimately won this game the real winners are Shore for having more character and class. I have never witnessed "fan" behavior such as RFH displayed on Shore Regional's field. Ever. They should be ashamed of themselves. Players, fans and the parents. It was obnoxious.
To lifetimesoccerfan..
I understand that it was a dirty game, and i certainly do not mean to bash on Shore or the players, but you have to realize something. As a player on the field, i had a completely different view of the game then you did. RFH was playing very physical and dirty, but i know for a fact that Shore committed more fouls, and this was not just a result of bad referees (which they were). Players like Juliano from Shore were actually throwing dirt in Rumson players eyes, and the cheap shots and dirty plays were certainly going both ways, which is what happens during a game between two teams with such a rivalry. And the comments about the "products of the environment" are completely immature, unnecessary and hyppocritical, as the Shore parents and fans were just as loud and obnoxious, especially when the two teams played at Shore's home field. The player who was "rolling around for attention" was elbowed in the face and was bleeding from the mouth and nose. Shore played a good game, and dominated the first half, but you can't say that RFH's goals had no reflection of skill on the field when they beat Shore twice, outscoring them 6-4. Maybe a no-skilled team could beat an "amazingly skilled" team once, but certainly not twice. IT was an extremely emotional game, and both teams left it all on the field, but please dont exaggerate or provide one-sided and biased accounts of the game.
what is with all this talk about rfh and shore? the game is over with and both teams arent good enough to hang with the top dogs in the sct. Both teams should just move on
dude shut up, shore or rumson can beat any1, they are both great teams. Shore's got skilled players and play well together and RUmson plays strong , so if i were you before saying anyting id wait to see what happens in sct
should be top 3
Howell
Manalapan
CBA
Manalapan lost to cba in first game of season with tons of controversy, and without grienkevich in the goal. Should have had the second Howell game but terrible judgement on a call by the ref gave Howell the PK which led to the tie. Watch out for Jon Franklin who is the secret weapon sophmore at the position midfield.
the top three dude is right. . .but i would have to say that cba lacks the talent, and howell and manalapan are evenly matched.
i know nothing about soccer
lol. Well allow me to delve into my reservoir of "nothing" to offer a few more points.
Both Shore and Rumson would have a tough time hanging with Howell or Manalapan, but it's not crazy to think they could. Shore played Manlapan 1-0 last year in the SCT and Rumson is fast enough to run with either. The problem for Rumson is that their is not going to be an advantage against Howell or Manalapan. If Shore can get healthy, they might be better suited to hang in the SCT.
I know these are HS athletes who are supposed to be treated fairly by fans, but I don't understand people harping on these fans behind the goal. I think the players are mature and focused enough to block that out and play. If the kids in the crowd want to act that way, you don't have to like it, but I don't don't see how it's a major issue.
I think this is great for the SCT. Shore and Rumson can play with anyone.
the shore-rumson game was a bunch of crap, shore totally outplayed rumson just like they did last time they played. Rumson was lucky that 3 of shores starters got injured and were not able to perticipate in the whole game. Bryan Guadanio(amazing stopper) had a broken foot, Steve Kahle(A very strong forward) get nailed by the goalie and was not able to continue in the game, and worst of all Connor McKenzie AKA Caveman was taken out of the game by a dirty elbow to the head after the play...Rumson should be ashamed of how they where snickering when the kid was coming off on the strecher...I think if Rumson ever has to play Shore again this season things will be VERY different
The Shore, Rumson game was classic. Shore played very well but their goals were no spectacular team play. Novoa is a great player and his first goal deserves SportsCenter Top 10 but his second, a direct kick just outside the box, was off a bogus call where a RFH player jumped straight up for a header and the ref called a foul. Juliano didnt actually play soccer. He ran around like a moron just trying to take kids out and ultimately was leveled himself on a clean play. He should stick to baseball. i guess he's better with smaller balls. But what pisses me off is all the Shore parents coming on here and saying that RFH is unsportsmanlike. They werent laughing at all when the kid was taken off on a stretcher. They all stood up and gave him a standing ovation. The play was not dirty either. it was a late shoulder, which happens 10 times a game. Do not say RFH parents are immature either. Thank god that obnoxious guy on cruthes wasnt there yelling a bunch of b.s. The refs were bad but clearly both ways. Shore has the best player in Novoa but Rumson is clearly a better TEAM.
i just wanna ask whoever wrote that last comment, do you really think that Rumson's pk wasnt a bs call? and btw Rumsons goals are all the same, they all come from throw ins, or crosses, nothing that you could be impressed by, im not saying Rumson is a bad team, but in my opinion, they are not better than Shore. yes rumson mightve won the division, and both games with shore, but i think Rumson needs to concentrate a littlemore in the game and not so much in being violent.
Novoa is an amazing player, and both of his goals were amazing, yeah the second one mightve been a bs call, but so was Rumsons first goal, and so was the last goal ,when the play prior to that throw in shouldve been an offside.
I hope Shore and RFH play again, and settle this once and for all. Good luck to both teams in SCT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwmR5Dol4Ng
"btw Rumsons goals are all the same, they all come from throw ins, or crosses, nothing that you could be impressed by"
you know nothing about soccer thats how you play the game. its called wing play. your not supposed to jam the ball up the middle every time.
and stop telling Rumson to stop being violent. first off its playing physical not violent. watch this video(http://youtube.com/watch?v=lNxGG0FEvaQ, the first game between the two) and tell me Shore does not play physical. plus its part of the game. you people act like soccer is a no contact sport. its ridiculous.
"btw Rumsons goals are all the same, they all come from throw ins, or crosses, nothing that you could be impressed by"
so your saying those throw ins are not impressive. why doestn Shore have anybody that can throw the ball that far. plus, if your saying the 2 flip throws werent impressive your just an ignorant prick
People who say the rumson fans are immature are only looking at one side of the story. How about the group of shore parents who approached 3 RFH students in the parking lot, cursed them off, and flew out of the parking lot blasting the horn and giving the finger? Pretty mature, especially for parents, and to lifetimesoccerfan that player "rolling on the ground" was elbowed in the face and came off the field covered in blood. Watch the youtube video posted above to see what actually happened, and not someone's biased view.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwmR5Dol4Ng
Novoa's amazing bike is at the 1 minute mark.
"I hope Shore plays Rumson again, i wanna see what would happen if Shore actually had all their starters...things would be different"
--The first time that RFH beat Shore you had all the players you needed to try and beat us.
"As a parent I felt that was the most horrendous game I've ever watched - RFH players spent more time slamming into shore players and rolling on the ground for attention than they did actually playing the game of soccer. Some of those RFH players should be on the stage, not the soccer field!!"
--You call yourself a good example of a parent, while you confront RFH players, giving them the finger while you leave our parking lot defeated and upset that you lost a 2-goal lead game? Sure the goals were nice, but were no more prepared than Rumson's goals. One was a scrappy clearance off a corner kick and the other was a poor foul call.
Now, to go on about your mindless argument on Rumson's bad class on the field.
Rumson committed fouls, some of which were obviously dirty. However, look at over half the the Shore players, and they made for more fouls. These included trying to pull down players' shorts, throwing dirt into RFH eyes on set pieces, punching, to name a few from my perspective. Shore players have a history of being dirty, and the first game against RFH was the same way.
"The bad sportsmanship wasn't just limited to the RFH students - obviously they are products of their environment if the parents watching the game near me were anything to go by."
--Wait, you are making fun of the class of Rumson parents? I'll stop there.
"the shore-rumson game was a bunch of crap, shore totally outplayed rumson just like they did last time they played."
--How can you say Shore outplayed Rumson in this second game also? Rumson completely diminated possession imidiately after Shore scored their 2nd. And in overtime, did Shore even get the ball into the other half of the field?
"Rumson should be ashamed of how they where snickering when the kid was coming off on the strecher"
--I dont know where you got this idea, but the entire Rumson team clapped as the player left the field in a stretcher, want proof? watch the video, it's right in it! www.youtube.com/rfhsoccer
Thanks for your concern--RFH fans
The Shore vs Rumson game was b.s Both goals rumson scored on shouldn't of been goals. First goal (the pk) that shouldn't of been a call. There was no foul during that play. The Second goal shouldn't of been a goal because the play prior to the goal was offsides by a few yards. And how was there no call on the late hit to conner m. There should be to flag refs on the side and one ref in the middle. By the way six graders use that field to play soccer. Nice filed Rumson. Wait till shore plays rumson again
Regarding the story about the parents cursing off Rumson kids....wow how stories get twisted! I was actually surprised to hear such vulgar language coming from such young children. I was embarrased for them. To talk to adults in such a manner. Wow! Very disrespectful. Your entry regarding this incident is very incorrect.
You had to be on the sidelines to hear the snickering.
Why was the offside play left out of the youtube video?
"By the way six graders use that field to play soccer. Nice filed Rumson. Wait till shore plays rumson again"
we have a 50 times nicer home field than every team we have played this year. our regular field is grassy turf on the football field at the school but there was a football game that day. and if the game was on the turf, Rumson would dominate haveing unbelievable speed at the top.
but all i want is one Shore fan, parent, or player to come on here and say: RFH you played good and beat us fair and square on friday. the only one of you to do this is Novoa who has class. the only one after the game to congratulate us and say nice game.
also i think Pahler of Rumson is a better player than Novoa considering he wins every ball in the air and takes more control of the game than Novoa
"By the way six graders use that field to play soccer. Nice filed Rumson. Wait till shore plays rumson again"
The actual RFH field is turf, however this game was the day of homecoming so the football team had to use the turf field from 4:30 on which left us with the field we normally just practice on.
Pahler wins more headers, but Novoa is better with his feet, im not saying Pahlers bad, or Novoa is better , im just saying they both play a totally different style of soccer...
"By the way six graders use that field to play soccer. Nice filed Rumson. Wait till shore plays rumson again"
correct me if i'm wrong but issnt your shore home field more or less the same size?
Good Game Rumson- Your players showed some guts. That being said the refs did help your cause. That game should have ended in a tie. OFFside is Offside. Soccer Should not be played on Turf-Grass is the true pitch to play on.
The Field was disgraceful- Dirt
no one said anything about offsides untill unintelligent parents came on here with that excuse. not one player or coach said anything about offsides during the game.
plus rumson was pressuring shore that whole overtime. shore didnt get the ball into there half all 5 minutes of overtime
Offside was seen by this unintelligent parent. I coach very high level team and I can tell you when an offisde should and should not be called. Rumson won the game-its over. Bad calls are part of the game so Shore must move on.
Do you guys wanna watch the game? youtube.com/rfhsoccer
credit to #10 and the keep but the rest are all really annoying and cant take a loss. Even the parents complained and stole our game ball. And one of our players did get a concussion.
shore sucks
all of the shore kids keep blaming it on the obnoxious crowd behind the shore goal, but wasn't the winning goal on the opposite side? and if two players carry their whole team, then that's not a team. and the player that was carted off the field wasn't laughed at. it was very serious and i highly doubt that any rfh fan laughed at him.
This comment has been removed by the author.
shore smells like turnips, and pepnips when they get stinky on a hot humid day..
It was an RFH fan who helped a Shore parent call 911 to tell them which exact field to come to, and when they arrived he ran up to parking lot to direct them.
Hope the player involved has a speedy recovery and is able to participate in post-season games.
Real mature!!
wow last few coments are very mature. It was a good game and both teams played very well. all the other nonsense that had to do outside the field shouldnt matter. It was a very dirty hard faught game, but the rumson players have always had a dirty reputation. There is no doubt that rumson is a good team, but shore is better and should go farther in the sct depending on returning players from injuries. And regarding the referees, whoever manages the highschool soccer needs to realize how terrible the ref's really are. its terrible when the outcome of the match has so much to do with bad calls. again both teams are very good and should do well in the sct. and to all you "northern" teams from jersey who think we can't compete. just wait untill we play you guys to judge us. Go shore!
Wow, I am so mad I missed the Shore Rumson game. I look forward to checking it out on youtube. I wasn't at the game, nor do I have any allegiance to either side, however I do coach in B central and have played shore/rumson twice each this year. Using my best judgement from the four encounters Rumson was clearly a class organization with a class coach. The two times I played Shore I could not be more disappointed with their coach and players and their arrogance and it just didn't seem to me that they put acting classy very high on their list. Reading the initial posts on the blog I was stunned that RFH fans would be that classless but it seemed to be shore fans pointing fingers once I read on. It's unfortunate that the game could not have been played on the turf, but please, to bring that up as if it were someone's fault is ridiculous. Try having one field to practice with a Boy's Varsty, Girls Varisty and Field hockey team. Thats just a silly remark. As far as these teams being able to run with the best in the shore, I have seen them both in action, and even though I pull for RFH a little more, both these teams are extremely solid and I think people look past them because of our division. There is some outstanding talent on these squads. And finally about the people standing behind the goals, cheering or smack talking or whatever, check out a D-1 college game and get back to me. It's only games-men-ship and home-field, which is great.
poopiez on shore
shore smells like roasted poos over a campfire. i make smores with shores turdies. EAT POOPS SHORE!@
shore is the little squishys between me toesies. shore makes the shitty in me poopie hole smell like little flowers. shore is dum dum!
No one likes Rumson, except people from Rumson. Give it up. Ask anyone from the surrounding towns, no one likes you
B Central Coach- I coach A very high level U 16 boys team and I can tell you that the Rumson coach does have class however, The Rumson Parents and Fans were out of control at both the Shore Field and the Rumson Field. The Shore AD had to ask some of the Rumson parents to stop Screaming and berating The Shore players and Refs. I am one who believes that the game is played on the field and both teams are solid teams- The game was very intense as you can see by the Blog. I did witness a Rumson parent tell an elderly woman to F-Off after Shore scored second goal so lets not talk about class. The Shore coach is very respectful and understands sportsmanship. No pointing fingers but I doubt your a coach if you would get on a blog and call out the Shore Coach (Thats Classless)
#22 on Rumson deliberately leveled Connor MacKenzie after the play was over, obviously out of frustration. It was blatant and deserved a red. This is shown on the video on youtube of the game. It was a low thing to do and he should be penalized.
Yes soccer is a contact sport, but giving a cheap shot after the play, be realistic, no one wants anyone getting hurt. The poor kid had a concussion, and almost passed out on the field.
Put that in the article, author, instead of a bunch of bull on how well Rumson plays together. They're a mediocre, dirty team that doesn't deserve the recognition that they receive
READ THIS:
EXAMPLE OF HOW SHORE HAS NO CLASS:
when one of my friends was leaving the game, an RFH parent asked him to run over to the bleachers and grab her chair for her. he went over, grabbed the chair and started to walk back to the mother. as he was heading up the sidelines he heard one of the shore parents say "we stole one of their game balls" and laugh. then as the parents and players passed the goal, the same shore parent started to pick up two of the cones the RFH players use during practice. my friend asked the shore parent to leave the cones there. she asked why, and he responded "because those are ours" then as the shore parents were leaving the parking lot, she asked my friend again "are you sure i can't have those cones?"
"yeah, i'm sure" my friend replied
"oh, well, purple is my favorite color. its so feminine"
"ok, that's great"
"its such a girly color, though"
"ok, we won, now leave" he responded frustrated.
the shore parent paused for a moment, then said "are you seriously trying to start shit with an adult?"
my friend laughed and turned away. As the car pulled out of the parking lot, the parent flipped my friend off and continued to curse at him. they honked, and left.
now you tell me, is that classy?
Shores just mad that RFH is better in soccer and outplayed them in every aspect of the game,
Shore keep your comments to yourself!
"#22 on Rumson deliberately leveled Connor MacKenzie after the play was over, obviously out of frustration."
false! watch the video a little more closely. wasnt #22 at all
you know how i know Shore parents have no class? this whole figgen blog. they wont give up
(what Rumson kids are talking about poop. you sound gay as hell, stop)
it was #22 i was there.
Turn The Blog off Enough Already.
Lets have a "friendly match". This needs to end. Enough with the trash talk.
Anyone know how many yellow cards RFH got? Can someone let RFH players (and coach) know that yellow cards aren't like baseball cards. You aren't trying to collect them. If the ref shows a yellow card it's NOT a good thing!
wasnt 22 watch the video and admit yyour wrong
For anyone who doubts it was a cheap shot given to Caveman in Shore/Rumson game tune into Youtube video-player should be suspended for rest of season-I guess only way for Pahler to take over game is for team to take out competition-Your thoughts, please Matt
who committed the cheap shot. It looks like a player in the 20's number range. I cant tell by the video

The "woman" that tried to take the cones is not a parent. What she did was definately wrong, but she is not a parent, and barely even an adult. I just wanted to clarify that. I don't think any of the Shore parents would do anything like that. I know she's not a parent. I saw the whole thing happen and she was definately out of line.
