Manalapan wins Group IV Title (Sort of)

Manalapan looked primed to win its first ever state title Frinday night, but instead settled for its first ever state title, as weird as that sounds. The Braves tied Clifton 1-1 in the Group IV final after letting a one-goal lead slip away in the 65th minute.

The goal against Manalapan was the first of these playoffs, and it came pretty much the only way possible to get a ball past Jake Grinkevich: on redirection. The first shot sent Grinkevich one way and the ensuing touch sent the ball in the other direction. There wasn't much he could have done.

Jeff Weitz scored the Manalapan goal on a 35-yard bomb that went over Clifton keeper Chris Kosciolek's head after he came up a little too far. Unfotunately for the Braves (except for Weitz of course), they'll probably remember the goals that didn't go in rather than Weitz' goal.

George Quintano slid a shot just wide of the far post on a one-on-one with the keeper, and Greg Grzelak had two good looks in OT, but one hit the post and the other went over the crossbar. There were some other good opportunities, a few of which ended in nice saves by Kosciolek.

The best save of the game didn't even count as it turned out. With two minutes left and the score tied at 1, Clifton thought Manalapan touched the ball on a free kick and proceded to take the restart themseles and turn it into a breakaway. Oscar Gonzalez had a one-on-one with Grinkevich and ripped a shot toward the far post, but Grinkevich came up, got his right hand on it and it hit the far post and kicked away. As it turned out, Manalapan should have retained possession anyway, so the ball moved back to the spot of the original free kick. That would hve been the play of the game had it counted.

Dropping back into safe-mode probably hurt Manalapan in this game, but it's hard to second-guess John Natoli for implementing a strategy that has worked all year. Give credit to Clifton for getting the better of play when they were down a goal. When the game was even, Manalapan was able to ssert itself a little better.

The Manalapan kids seemed content to take the tie. It was a little strange, because each player I talked to seemed progressively more at peace with the result. I think once they got past the fact that they didn't win the game in front of them, they realized they won the first state title in school history. It might not be perfect, but it'll go down as a title nonetheless.

A lot of people watching these games will call for shootouts to decide one champion instead of settling for a tie, which I'll admit, doesn't feel right. But I'll take this over a shootout. From a spectator standpoint, these games are like the last Sopranos episode. There's no definite resolution, there is a lot left unanswered, and you are left wanting more. But at the end of the day, it's the only way to end it. A shootout would have been like a shootout between Tony some of Phil Leotardo's guys where someone is left in a pool of their own blood. Even if Tony (I guess Manalapan in this case) comes out on top, you might get a kick out of it at first, but there would be the feeling that it just wasn't the right way to end something that was so much more than just a shootout. As it is, the ending might have been a little disappointing, but it fits the rest of the story better than the alternative would have.

That's all for games I guess. It's been real. We'll move on to All-Shore talk next week.

Now if MHS can only get Natoli to control himself on the sideline and be a positive representative -display some sportsmanship!!

It's such an embarrassment that the Administration has to stand close by to keep him in check.

Maybe someday the Administration and FRSD will do something so that the MHS reputation is about sportsmanship and the referees are not carding him on a regular basis.

so there is no clear cut state champ. neither team won and thats a shame how can either team say they won? when they didnt. how can they say they are the state champs? when they are not.why didnt they play ot and then a shootout this is the way it should have been. not ending in a tie, there has to be a winner a STATE CHAMPION. in my opinion both teams lose .

Matt or anyone- How does All Shore work? Do they they have a FIrst, Second Team? Do they still do First and Second Team Monmouth and Ocean? Whats the breakdown?

Not a bad All Shore. I would eliminate Martin and Thomsen and consider adding Hojnacki, Rice, Stern. Mackin - I am not sure he merits 1st team based on stats alone, he was 'invisible' in games that mattered. Calafiore was great at the beginning of the season but ran out of gas towards the end, KB carried Howell.

i think that you have to consider hojnacki for first team all shore he had something like 7 or 8 game winning goals this season and probably at least half of thomsen goals came off his assists. just a thought

you have to consider hojnacki because without him, thomsen woud have no where near the stats he has now. hojnacki had 15 goals and 22 assists on the year. Just trying to give credit to the guys who are the work horses of the team.

Be careful with the "stats" comments regarding MonDon. MD didn't make a push in SCT or States and B-South doesn't compare with the game in / game out competition of A-North and A-South (although Central was competitive). This doesn't necessarily take away from Thompsen or Hojnacki, but just take their goals and assists with a grain of salt, b/c a lot of other players would have piled up similar numbers against Barnegat, Manchester, etc.

Alot of good players Throughout varsity regardless. Just because a team plays A-north or South does not mean that they have all the best players. Be Fair- Many players in smaller schools that have a ton of talent and skill

these players have no control over the division that they play in. all they can do is play to their best and they have done that. thompsen or hojnacki would have done just as well had they played in a south. their stats indicate that they are very talented players and should get the recognition for that

November 18, 2007 at 7:54 PM

they are just not as good as others. Maybe they will get second team.

how can you say they are not as good as others? hojnacki is committed to a division 1 school and thomsen is still looking at schools so both of these players will go on to play at a very high level in college.

Shore Conference is loaded with top notch talent. Congrats on college endeavors (college is more important than post season accolades), but going to a D1 school does not guarantee anyone All-Shore 1st team bc there are so many talented players.

being recruited by a division 1 college this early is quite an accomplishment i think that speaks volumes to the talent these player have. to say hojnacki and thompsen are not as good as others makes no sense. to my knowledge only a handful of shore conference players are already committed to d 1 programs

hojnacki and Thompson are good second team players. Be happy with that.

Everyone be fair- Has anyone on this forum see Roberto Novoa Play? Very skilled and talented player who puts the ball in the net. How about Pahler from Rumson or Lowey From Ocean or Scarpino from Shore all very strong Players that could start and excel on any A north or South team. Dont be blinded by school pride- take a real look at all the talent at The shore- its loaded across all divisions

you are so right. there is an abundance of talent in the shore conference. it just seems unfair that because a player might have chosen to go to a school that plays in a less competitive division they don't get the recognition they deserve.

I saw a lot of the Shore players at the All Star game yesterday, minus underclassmen and Georgie and Zeller. There were a handful of players who stood out - South: Bethel, Hazard, Thomsen, Gashlin, Smith, Lannon. North: Mackin, Stern, Rice, Lowy, Voutsinas, Hiller, Fitzsimmons. I would expect several of these guys will garner all-shore recognition.

With all dur respect to everyone...I think we should congratulate Manalapan and Coach Natolie for a job well done this year. Your disparaging remarks have no credibility and should not be tolerated on here. ANy Manalapan player will tell you that Natolie gets the most out of his players and is by far the most successful coach in the school in many different sports. Coach Natolie stands by his players on and off the field and has built a solid tradition at Pan. Admistration and the FRHSD should show a little gratefulness to a coach who works 24-7 and expects big things from players. If the referees really thought Natolie was bad the last 2 years I guarantee they would not think twice about pulling a red card.....but they didn't! They didn't because nothing deserved a red. Therefore, if your jealous and need something to defame Pan with- so be it...if your a Pan player-you know thats a bunch of bull$%$. Maybe if Natolie does leave other schools can get a chance at making the local paper during soccer season.

Pan player and supporter
