Forys Breaks State Record

Craig Forys ran the two-mile in 8:48.99 at the Henderson Track and Field Invitational in West Chester, Penn., breaking Charles Logan's (Bernards) 28 year-old New Jersey record by three seconds. He ran a 4:21 second mile and a 1:01.5 last 400 meters.

Rob Ziegler, softball writer for the Asbury Park Press, argues that this is not an NJ state record because Forys broke it in Pennsylvania. Compelling argument. That being the case, Rob, a Penn State grad, is not a college graduate in the state of New Jersey.

Congrats to Craig Forys.

That is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Does he have any idea how many state records have fallen at the Penn Relays, National Championships, and other big out of State Meets. I guess all of the State Records that have been run in the NYC Armory for indoor shouldn't count either.

Obviously, Rob was not being completely serious. He was playing devil's advocate by presenting what is actually a logical argument. For instance, if you break a Track A record on Track B, it would not be considered a Track A record. But the criteria here is pretty clear: Forys is a New Jersey runner, so he is evaluated within the context of New Jersey standards, no matter where he competes. Now if they gave him a Pennsylvania state record to boot, that wouldn't make any sense.
