Bulletin Board Material
Many times, student athletes respond to a general question by saying, "Nobody believed in us, except us!" or "Everyone picked against us!" or "We kept reading about how we're not that good.'' Well, most of the time, "nobody" and "everybody" just means the paper.
No more. There is a poll at the bottom of the post, so feel free to vote and give some of these teams somebody to get mad at. Meanwhile, I'll still do my part. Here is my breakdown of the first round games.
#26 Raritan (5-5-3) at #7 Toms River South (9-5)
When: Wednesday, Oct. 17, 3 :30 p.m.
Where: Toms River South High School Football Field.
What to expect: Of all the first round games, this is probably the greatest mismatch. Both teams play a lot of sophomores, but the Indians have experienced impact players sprinkled throughout the field, whereas Raritan's difference-makers with experience from last-year's postseason are sweeper Drew Illingworth and fellow back Corey Hahn. Forward Bill Voutsinas has come on of late, but he's still only effective in spurts. Raritan has played solid defense all year, but they haven't seen Ian Martin and Andrew Leissing.
The Pick: TR South 3-0.
#17 Toms River North (8-7-1) at #16 Manasquan (10-3-1)
When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 2 p.m.
Where: Sea Girt Army Base.
What to Expect: A low scoring game. Manasquan has allowed seven goals in 14 games, but have only scored 24 themselves. With Dan Huff back, Toms River North is far more potent than any team A Central has to offer when it comes to scoring, so they will put the pressure on. The question is, can Manasquan get a goal or two against a Mariner defense that has been here and there. I was high on both of these teams at the beginning of the year, but they've both underacheived to a certain degree. The good news is, they are each playing well at the right time, which should make for a good game.
The Pick: TR North 2-1.
#27 Pinelands (7-4-1) at #6 Monsignor Donovan (14-2)
When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 3 p.m.
Where: Whitty Road Fields
What to Expect: The Griffins beat the Wildcats twice this season, 1-0 on Sept. 10 and 5-0 on Sept. 26. They are familiar with each other, which is usually beneficial to the lesser of the two teams, which in this case, is Pinelands. Coach Joe Mahon is hoping a healthier version of his team will produce better results than the 5-0 debacle from a few weeks back. He should get a better performance this time, but Mon Don just has too many weapons.
The Pick: Monsignor Donovan 4-1.
UPSET ALERT!!!
#25 Lakewood (7-5) at #8 Monmouth (10-3-2)
When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 3 p.m.
Where: Monmouth Reg. High School.
What to expect: Upset alert is like a terror alert. It only means keep your eye on it, not that anything will actually happen. With that said, Monmouth is a vulnerable team and Lakewood has the bodies to play with them. According to Monmouth coach Darren Spadevecchia, cetermidfielder Tiago Dutra has a pulled hamstring and is day-to-day. If Dutra is hampered or out, the Falcons are in trouble, because Matt Accisano, KaShawn Cotte, and Donalson Palacios have the skill to score on the Monmouth defense. Lakewood, while playing tough against Mon Don, hasn't been able to seal the deal in close games against superior opponents. So unless the Piners are superior on Thursday, Monmouth should escape.
The Pick: Monmouth 3-2.
#23 Point Boro (7-5-3) at #10 Middletown North (7-7-2)
When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 3 p.m.
Where: Middltown North High School.
What to expect: The Lions have simply not slipped up against lesser teams this year. They are 0-5-1 against CBA, Manalapan, and Howell, and 7-1 against the rest of A North. Their other loss came to Jackson, so the combined records of the teams that beat them is 46-11-8. They are a well-prepared, disciplined team that doesn't make too many mistakes. They also have a few guys who can make the other team pay in Nick Falanga (9 goals), Pete Gallagher (three goals, four assists), and Tom Carroll (two goals, three assists). Point Boro, meanwhile, has Kyle Hazard (12 goals) and Nick Crowning (10 points). They are good players, but they don't have the team Middletown North does.
The Pick: Middletown North 3-1.
UPSET ALERT!!!
#22 Shore (9-5-1) at #11 Freehold Township (8-7-1)
When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 3 p.m.
Where: Freehold Twp. High School.
What to expect: I wish I could tell you. I'm almost positive it will be a close game, but there is a chance the Patriots could come to play and run Shore off the field. There's also a chance they don't come to play and Shore gets healthy in time to run them off the field. Freehold Twp.'s schizophrenic season aside, I actually like the matchup for Shore. Freehold Twp. is a team that wants to play possession soccer with its skilled midfielders Ryan Clark and Brenden Noesges, and rely on defenders like Logan Smith, Bobby Searby, and Dan Mularz to keep things clean in front of sophomore keeper Jeff Kurczeski. That should be okay by the Blue Devils, who have Roberto Novoa, who plays at a similar level, working the midfield. The keys for Shore in pulling the upset: 1) How healthy are Bryan Guadagno, Connor McKenzie, and Steve Kahle? and 2) Can Shore keep forwards Nick Composto and Connor Egan from finishing? Class B Central does better than people think in this tounament and I feel like I have to pick an upset in round one. In the words of my colleague and APP football writer Steve Falk, this one has upset written all over it.
The Pick: Shore 3-2
#21 Wall (6-5-5) at #12 Marlboro (9-9)
When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 3 p.m.
Where: Marlboro High School.
What to expect: The team that loves ties in a game that can't end in a tie. Wall plays everyone tough, even some of the bigger schools like TR North and Midd. North. The 1-1 tie against the Lions on Saturday is a good barometer for this game, with the game coming down to one goal. Marlboro is the feel-good story heading into the tourament, winning seven of 10 just to get in. They have been able to score from day one and they tranformed themselves from a horrible defensive team into a very good one. Hunter Gorskie and Mike Stone can score at any time, and with the defense straightened out, I don't see Wall scoring. This one should be 1-0 for most of the game, perhaps with an exclaimation goal to seal it.
The Pick: Marlboro 2-0.
#19 St. John Vianney (8-4-3) at #14 Red Bank (9-4)
When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 3 p.m.
Where: Red Bank Reg. High School
What to expect: This is the second of the first-round interdivisional games, with the two teams splitting the regular season series 1-1. The Bucs were dealing with some injury problems, mainly to Marty Stern who missed the first two games of the season, when they lost 3-2 to the Lancers on Sept. 8. They are healthy now, and put together a nine-game winning streak to win Class A Central, before losing its last two to Manasquan and Marlboro. In the second meeting, Stern scored a goal in the 2-0 Bucs win and his presence up front allows Rod Brandt to take a more active role on the defensive end of the field. Despite the back-to-back losses, and Shawn Gilpin for SJV, the Bucs should be okay in the rubber match.
The Pick: Red Bank 2-1.
#18 Neptune (9-6) at #15 Central (10-3-1)
When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 3 p.m.
Where: Central Reg. High School.
What to expect: Like Red Bank, Neptune is hungover after a long winning streak. The Fliers had won seven straight before back-to-back losses to Hamilton West and Freehold Township, which seemed to damage their seed in the SCT. Both losses were by one goal and Neptune had a good chance to win both, but allowing four goals, followed by three the next day has to worry coach John Knight some. Neptune's attack with Mike Cozzetta up top and Brennen Fitzsimmons in the middle will be a lot for the Golden Eagle defense to handle, but keeper Kazuki IO has been able to protect any defensive lapses with some outstanding play at times. On the other side, Neptune has been vulnerable on defense, and forward Clay Gashlin is healthy to go with Kyle Cronin in the middle. If their defense can keep Neptune off the board early, I like Central's balance for the full 80 (or more?).
The Pick: Central 3-2.
#20 Ocean (5-5-5) at #13 Rumson-Fair Haven (13-1-1)
When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 3:45 p.m.
Where: Rumson-FH High School football field.
What to expect: The Bulldogs are not happy with their seeding and they took it out on Holmdel in an 8-1 win Tuesday. Rumson is a fast team that will try to force its pace upon Ocean for the full 80 minutes, while Ocean will try to stay in front of the Rumson forwards and counter when the opportunity presents itself. Ocean has to be careful about playing not to lose, because they haven't won since Sept. 19. They have the best player on the field in Ben Lowy, but Rumson is a team on a mission, while Ocean is a team searching for an identity. I'm not sure they can find one in time to beat the Bulldogs.
The Pick: Rumson 4-2.
#24 Holmdel (7-6-1) at #9 Brick (8-6-2)
When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 6 p.m.
Where: Drum Point Field Complex
What to expect: Neither team can be feeling that great about themselves after their games coming into the tourney. Brick had a chance to show what they were made of against Howell, and instead got pounded 6-0 in Kyle Bethel's ongoing comeback tour. Holmdel had a nice tune-up game against Rumson Tuesday, but got run-off the field 8-1. The good news is that this is a totally different game more than one level. From Holmdel's standpoint, they are a team of mostly sophomores and freshmen facing a team of mostly juniors in Brick. Rumson was face too fast and physical and played an unconventional style, whereas Brick is more skilled, but also smaller and will bang the ball around more. Brick tries to play the same style Howell does, but they aren't nearly as talented, and it showed. Goals won't be all that abundant, but Brick should be able to control the game with its skill players and stellar defense. They just need to be careful not to keep Holmdel in the game too long.
The Pick: Brick 3-1.
#28 Point Beach (10-6) at #5 Toms River East (10-4-1)
When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 7 p.m.
Where: TR East High School Football Field.
What to expect: This won't be as bad as it looks on paper. The Raiders are winless in their last four games (with one tie) and have to be down about having to play in the first round instead of having the bye. They may take it out on Point Beach, but they don't really get to prove themselves until next round or if they run into CBA in the quarterfinals. Point Beach, meanwhile is a nice little team. They've played a challenging out-of-division schedule for a Group I school with games against Monmouth, Manasquan, and Long Branch. None of those teams are as talented as TR East, but there are skilled players from last year's team, like Richie Baiata who fell to CBA in the 80th minute in last year's SCT. The Beach will come to play, but the Raiders will just be too much.
The Pick: Toms River East 4-1.
I'll finish up the bracket once we get down to 16 and things get interesting.

Matt, One Important aspect to the Freehold Twp/Shore game is the injury report. The other is a Midfielder (Taylor Scarpino)- when he inserts himself into the game he can take the game over. In the Ocean game this kid not only scored the game tieing but also played solid defensive mid and shut Lowey down. Skilled Defensive Midfielders sometimes dont get the credit they deserve. I can tell You that if Scarpino comes too play Freehold Twp will have a problem.
What a difference a year makes...
Rumson lost to Holmdel 6-1 in a game that wasn't as close as the score in last year's opening round of the SCT. Matt, I would say they were getting revenge from last year's game rather than say they were upset with their seeding.
The Rumson-Holmdel game was about making a statement. Nothing really about revenge.

Who won the poll for most likely upset? When I voted (for Ocean), they were slightly ahead. I see Lakewood gave Monmouth a tough time, but could not win. Saturday's most likely upsets are Marlboro over TRE and Freehold over MonDon.
