TR East-Marlboro

What a way to end the Round of 16. After seven games finished without an upset, Marlboro pulls out an improbable, penalty kick win after playing East to a 2-2 tie. I knew I was going to a night game Saturday and it didn't take me long to decide to go to East-Marlboro, but I'm still glad I didn't spring for the TR South-Midd. North blowout. Here's what went down at TRE:

First off, to the poster who thought I might be teasing to the paper by holding off on the score, please don't fret. I wouldn't do that to you. The game just went as long as possible, I talked to the coaches and some of the kids and I go back to my computer in the press box to write on deadline. I may tease some stuff to the paper, but never the score.

Great win for Marlboro, but as great of a story as that was, it's hard not to feel for Brandon Zeller after this game. He quite literally did it all to get East to within inches of winning on several occasions and the ball just bounced against him. I can't remember seeing a kid play so well and have such bad luck. Here's a recap of his night:

-Scored the game-tying goal 1:30 into the second half after TRE played a very uninspired first half. That goal turned the game around, and East controlled play for the rest of the game until the pks. More on the Marlboro game-tying goal in a bit.

-Controlled the midfield in the second half. Marlboro moved the ball at will in the first half and outshot East 7-3. The final shots were 14-11 thanks to an East defense that turned it up, and it starts with Zeller on both ends.

-Hit the upper-right corner of the goal-post with about 15 minutes left. A couple inches lower and it's 3-1 TRE. That was the first of many bad breaks.

-Got taken down in the box by Alex DeJohn and appeared to hurt his knee pretty badly. But he got up, went to the sideline for a few minutes and came back. He seemed a little off the rest of the way.

-Played goalie in the shootout. He didn't save any shots, but he got a hand on Mario Rangel's attempt. The ball hit his hand, then the right post, then trickled all the way over to the other side of the net and across the line.

-Remeber that right post? It came back to haunt Zeller and East again when the senior captain ripped off the goalie jersey, threw down the gloves, and set up for the final pk. He needed to make it to force a second set of kicks, and he drilled a shot straight off the right post. Only, it didn't bounce across the goal and in, but rather right back towards Zeller.

It was a tough way to watch the game end for a player that played the game he did. I thought he was the best player on the field and to see him catch those breaks was a little hard to watch.

With all that said, the story here is Marlboro. Particularly their sophomore forward who has three SCT goals now and singlehandedly kept his team alive in the SCT. Mario Rangel's desperation boot to the upper 90 with 42 seconds left came out of nowhere. TRE dominated the second half, had some chances to seal it, didn't give Marlboro a great look all half, and all of the sudden, Rangel gets some room, and puts a shot on the money from 25-30 yard out from the left angle.

Credit, also, to the Mustangs for their play in the first half. They were outplayed after, but if not for a first half in which they controlled the game and took a 1-0 lead, Rangel's shot at the end would have been cosmetic, not consequential.

I like them a lot Tuesday against CBA, mostly because of the whole "it's hard to beat CBA three times" thing. One poster already put some picks up, and unfortunately I may need to piggy-back them, because they reflect my initial thoughts on the quarterfinal games.

I'll give you the schedule and picks Monday, in all likelihood, but for now, feast on this poll.

Good win for Marlboro- I have seen Mario play since he was a U-9. Mario is Talented player with a very good foot. CBA has to stick him hard and not let him square-Do that a couple of times and he gets off his game (no Disrespect). Mario has always been the kind of player that can put a ball in from anywhere. If you run him he runs out of gas. Good Luck CBA

Zeller had both goals in the TRE vs Marlboro. The first to tie it and then in 52nd minute off of a rebound. (not fitzsimmons)

i coulda swore it was fitz, but there were a couple bodies obstructing my view. Gillen mentioned Zeller's two goals when I was talking to him, and when I told him I thought Fitz scored it, he said he wasn't sure and he'd check. If it was indeed Zeller, I apologize for missing it and I'll looke into a correction.

Either way, great game for Zeller.

Marlboro over CBA? Matt before you jump on the Marlboro bandwagon, consider that CBA is recognized for playing the best possession soccer in the SCT. There is a reason for this. CBA has depth of skilled talent and it reflects itself on the pitch. No team has been able to play "soccer" with CBA. The Howell games were both very close. At CBA, Howell won because of a mental letdown moment that Howell exploited. At Howell, CBA went to overtie and missed a couple of chances. The early Freehold loss was also very close and but for a nice strike by Connor Egan it might have been different. The Manalapan loss was just ugly because CBA did not show up to play that day on Manalapan's ugly field.

CBA's wins have been mostly close by score, but not by play. The reason is CBA builds its attack from the back and comes forward together going east and west. It creates a "seige" of the opponent. From there they seek opportunities to score. Its difficult because of the shear number of bodies in the box cutting down angles. Even if they are behind, CBA remains very patient and does not succumb to the temptation to break their style of play. Yes, they allow scoring off counters at times, but no team that has played "soccer" with them has "beat" them. CBA's play also lifts the play of their opponents.

Marlboro, on the other hand, has skilled players who know how to play, but they tend to be scizophrenic lapsing into kick and runs at times. The game vs TRE was ugly HS soccer. CBA does not get drawn into that with the consequence that they play nice organized possession ball and they usually win. I don't think the 3 times a charm notion works in this case because of the consistentcy CBA has shown in their style of game. CBA will win in a close score.

Hey CBA lover- Very nice breakdown of CBA play however, game is won on the pitch not a blog- I have seen CBA play and I have to tell you Howell or Manalapan can beat them for that matter even Mon Don. You make it sound as if CBA is the Italian World Cup Team.

CBA- Playing Soccer is also breaking your opponents strengths. If that means playing ugly Soccer to beat CBA so be it.

In response to the previous poster about Zeller being the dirtiest player they've seen this year.....funny, he's gone the entire season without a yellow or red card. Be careful to not confuse intensity and heart with dirty play.

After watching CBA on saturday against Ocean, i would say they are one of the most overrated teams in the shore...

I have players I think are dirty and I don't find Zeller to be especially dirty.

It's no secret that CBA wants to play a "soccer game" as the one poster put it, rather than just a game of "goal-scoring." I guess we'll call it. That might make them the better team, it might make them a more legitmate soccer team, so to speak, but it doesn't put them in the semis. As we saw in that first Howell game, strange things can happen and before you know it, the ball ends up in the net.

As far as Martin vs. Bethel, I think you can keep Bethel out of the net if you put your mind to it, but that certainly doesn't keep Howell out of the net. Martin did a nice job on Mike Cozzetta of Neptune in the second half of the ame I saw, but Cozzetta had two goals in the first half. The only other forward that's on KB's level is Quintano, so while Martin has done well, this is a totally new challenge.

Matt: Souns like you have already decided on your Marlboro/CBA pick. Indeed, soccer is about "goal scoring" and CBA has outscored their opponents playing "soccer" in 12 of their matches now, and have lost by 2-1 margins in 3 others. I don't think you should presume to think CBA is satisfied with playing pretty soccer. Its not that at all. Its a recognition that controlled possession ball leads to wins. Its also fun to watch.

Possession is one thing finishing is another. The Ocean game was prime example of why CBA is not in the top three.

Bethel won't score, Martin will lock him up. The reason Cozetta scored two in the first half was because Martin wasn't on him. That's why when he was assigned to him the second half Cozetta didn't sniff the net. Also, I think you can include Mackin in the class of Bethel and Quintano, who Martin practices against every day.

A comment to the CBA bandwagoneer....You have it wrong my friend. Howell plays the best pure soccer in the shore. They have a passing attack and a build-up that is far superior to CBA and any other Shore Conference team. I watched both HHS-CBA matches and while the styles of both teams are similar, Howell had the better of play, more posession and far more dangerous opportunities. Lest you forget, Howell starts 7 juniors as well so thier game will only improve with maturity.

This game is about scoring more goals than looking better then the other tem. My picks:

Howell 3 - Monmouth 0
Pan 4 - TRS 3
Marlboro 2 - CBA 1
Mondon 2 - Jackson 0

Dear Howeller:

I hope CBA gets past a spirited Marlboro team for a 3rd time this season so we can all see at semi time which team plays the better soccer. I was at both CBA Howell games and saw Howell score on 2 corners and a mental breakdown by CBA. I saw CBA build 2 attacks in Howell box for conversions, so I beg to differ with you. If CBA and Howell meet in the semi, will people apply the tough to win 3x a season adage to the pregame hype?

CBA Wagoneer.

Yes Cba i think it is hard to win 3 in a row. So if you beat Marlboro you deserve credit for that and then Howeel will have to beat you for 3 in a row
